English III focuses on both writing and reading. The writing covers both personal essays and analytical essays. All genres of both fiction and nonfiction are covered. We concentrate on improving communication skills in both reading and writing. Our focus is American literature. We will prepare heavily for the Exit level ELA TAKS test. English III AP Language is an introductory college-level course that facilitates the development and fostering of a propensity for rhetoric and the study of language through close reading of and writing in a variety of modes for a variety of audiences. The course focuses on the philosophy that both reading and writing are centered around the study of the art of persuasion. We concentrate on the analysis of rhetorical purpose in both fiction and nonfiction writing: essays, speeches, editorials, letters, and the novel. A great deal of writing is done in this course, both in and out of class, in a variety of modes ranging from personal narrative to analytical to argumentative, as it mirrors the freshman English composition course in college.This class prepares students for both the ELA Exit Level TAKS test and the AP Language and Composition Exam.

English IV AP Literature is an introductory college-level course that develops an appreciation and skill in the analysis and interpretation of literature through close reading and writing in a variety of genres. The belief in this course is that literary study is a means to understanding the human experience. Literature covered in this class ranges from British novels to Shakespearean plays to modern poetry. Research involving literary criticism and evaluation will be explored closely following the MLA format. Writing opportunities range from out of class essays to timed writings, and from literary analysis to original poetry. This course mirrors a college level literature class and prepares the students for the AP Literature test in May. |

English IV utilizes the skills acquired from all years of English in secondary school. The purpose of the class is to enable all seniors to prepare for either collegiate or professional pursuits. To accomplish this, students will focus on analytical and personal writing, nonfiction and fiction readings, as well as the fundamental communication skills needed to be successful after high school. English II Pre-Advanced Placement (PreAP) is a college preparatory course that focuses on developing and enhancing the rhetorical and literary skills necessary to be successful in Advanced Placement classes here at Weatherford High School as well as college courses. Grammar and syntax, close reading, annotation, style analysis, process writing, and essay organization are the key areas of study in this class. All genres of literature are read in English II PreAP: expository and argumentative essays, poetry, drama, short stories, and novels. Writing is stressed with opportunities ranging from timed in-class paragraphs and essays to detailed, process-driven essays completed outside of class. Researched arguments following the MLA format will also be written as students utilize those skills crucial to the essays demanded of them in their future college courses. Critical thinking and sophistication of ideas are the ultimate goal of this class, enabling students to be successful on the standardized tests (TAKS, PSAT, SAT, AP) they will take in the future.
